What’s the Difference Between a Security Guard Patrol and Police Officers?

“Why do I need a security guard patrol when I’m already paying for the police?” It’s an understandable question, especially when budgets are tight.

However, the truth is that Houston security guard patrols have very different powers and responsibilities from the police. The two types of protection are not interchangeable. In particular, private security guards are often necessary because they’re always right there, on-site, providing protection. You don’t have to sit around waiting for the police to arrive!

In this post, let’s talk about the differences in their power sets and responsibilities.

  1. Different Powers

A private security guard is considered an “agent of the owner,” meaning they’re operating directly under the authority of the property owner. This gives them some extra leeway. For example, they can question or search potential criminals with less probable cause than police are required to have.

Also, all police are typically armed – and not every situation calls for an armed response. In some cases, the presence of guns can escalate a situation. Private security guards can be either armed or unarmed, depending on your needs.

  1. Detainment vs Arrest

One of the biggest differences between security guards and police is that guards have the right to detain suspects, but they do not have the right to arrest people. If someone is suspected of shoplifting, for example, they can be prevented from leaving the property and searched. The guard is only allowed to use minimal force in these situations and can typically only search the suspect and the property they have on their person.

If the suspect needs to be arrested, you must call the police for that. Police also can search more of the suspect’s property, including their car or their home, if it is warranted.

  1. Responsibilities

Police officers are fundamentally tasked with protecting a large chunk of the city; security guards are only responsible for protecting you and your property. This means you can have a security force on-site, 24/7 if needed, providing a highly visible warning to any criminals thinking of doing wrong.

This is particularly important when dealing with after-hours security. Criminals know that police typically requires several minutes to respond to a call, at least. On-site security forces provide an instant response, and that’s enough to make the bad guys think twice about messing with you.
