Protect Your Houston Home with These Easy Security Tips

Crime is on the rise around the country, and it’s vital that you stay safe.  Your home may be a magnet for thieves, burglars, and other home invaders – but there are plenty of things you can do to help deter them!

PGP Security is one of the top private security companies in Houston, and we’re dedicated to protecting Houston businesses and homeowners across the area.  These are our must-do tips for keeping criminals out of your home, and off your property.

Four Critical Tips for Securing Your Home in Houston

1 – Always lock all your doors and windows

It sounds basic, but you’d be surprised just how often burglars can access a property simply by opening a door or window.  Every night before you go to bed, and any time you’re leaving the house for more than a few hours, do a quick walk around and ensure every large access point is closed and locked.

2 – Keep your property well-lit

Crime happens in the dark. Few criminals are so brazen – or desperate – to try to pick your door’s lock with a bright light over their heads. For this reason, we highly recommend that everyone invest in outdoor lighting, especially motion-activated lights. If a would-be thief enters your property and suddenly a floodlight is pointing right at them, they’ll almost certainly leave.

3 – Don’t let your home look abandoned

A poorly kept house is going to attract more criminals than one which seems to be well-maintained.  Many professional thieves actively go around neighborhoods, looking for homes that appear abandoned or neglected, assuming they’ll be an easier target.  In particular:

  • Maintain your lawn.
  • Don’t let public-facing areas (lawn, deck, etc) get cluttered with junk
  • Promptly pick up your mail. Never let your mailbox become stuffed or overflowing.
  • Immediately clean up any graffiti or other defacement.

4 – Keep your vehicle secure

Whenever possible, we advise keeping your vehicle(s) inside a garage, for maximum protection.  If that isn’t an option, be sure your car is locked at all times.  Also, don’t leave any high-value items in your vehicle.  In fact, try to leave as little stuff in your car as possible. Even if you consider it worthless, a lot of stuff in a car can inspire a thief to investigate.
